Ethan's Typhlosion rushes through the portrait to deliver a flaming tag strike.
A partner in motion
The official Japanese card record lists this as Ethan's Typhlosion, SV9a 070/063 AR from Heat Wave Arena, illustrated by GIDORA. It is a Stage 2 Fire-type card with 170 HP, and its first attack, Buddy Blast, scales with the number of Ethan's Adventure cards in the discard pile.
That mechanic starkly represents Typhlosion moving with its trainer on and off card.
One diagonal
The painted composition is built on a hard diagonal. Ethan enters low from the bottom left, Typhlosion cuts across the centre, and the blast drives toward the upper right. The image reads almost like one panel from an action sequence: body, shout, flame, impact.
The diagonal gives the card its shared momentum. Ethan and Typhlosion do not occupy separate layers of the picture; their forms belong to one continuous push.
Ethan at the hinge
Ethan is small, but he is placed at the hinge of the attack. His forward lean, open mouth and raised arm connect the lower-left origin to Typhlosion's larger body. Typhlosion supplies the mass and fire, while Ethan supplies the push.
That makes the trainer more than a cameo. Remove him and the card would retain its speed, but lose the sense that the attack is being shared.
Foil as counter-motion
The physical card introduces another kind of movement. As the card tilts, the rainbow flares travel across that diagonal and change with the angle of the card.
This illustration supplies a stable direction; the foil cuts across it, making the surface flicker against the scene's forward drive. Rather than acting like another painted speed line, the reflected light makes the image vibrate.
Buddy Blast
The attack name is not subtle and fully characterises the pair. The rules text points to Ethan's Adventure, the artwork places Ethan inside the action, and the composition treats trainer and Pokémon as one moving system.
For collectors, that is the appeal: a Johto partnership card whose mechanics, composition and physical surface all contribute to the same subject, even when they move in different directions.
