Pitch Black ETB and Set: Is Darkrai a strong lead?

Pitch Black led by Mega Darkrai is hitting the shelves soon! 

The English release lands on July 17, 2026, with prerelease events beginning July 4. Pokemon's own materials put the set above 115 cards, led by Mega Darkrai ex and supported by Mega Zeraora ex, Mega Chandelure ex, Mega Excadrill ex, and the wider Mega Evolution block. The set follows Japan's Abyss Eye closely, which gives collectors a useful early read before English boxes properly open.

The Japanese market has already done the first pass. As of June 27, 2026, PriceCharting recent completed-sale data for Mega Darkrai ex SAR 114/081 from Abyss Eye showed eBay sales around USD 317 to USD 588 across June 16-19. Earlier release-window reporting had the Japanese Mega Darkrai gold card far higher, with the SAR below it and Gwynn sitting as the main Trainer chase.

That spread suggests that Pitch Black may not be a flat set where every premium pull moves together. Darkrai is the anchor. Zeraora, Chandelure, and Excadrill give the set depth, but the first wave of attention is likely to stay with Darkrai until English pull rates, condition, and graded supply become clearer.

What collectors should notice:
- The Japanese SAR has already calmed down, but it remains expensive enough to signal demand.
- English copies may look more accessible at first if supply is wide, but clean copies will matter as always.
- Pokemon Center ETB promos deserve a separate watch, especially if sealed allocation tightens.
- Early graded 10s can trade on scarcity before population reports catch up.
- Buying the specific card may be cleaner than chasing sealed if the target is one Darkrai treatment.
